How Meals Change Lives
Julie is happy and thriving in life. She's living on her own and has a great career as a long-term and hospice care giver. But just a short time back, that wasn't the case.
Julie was violently forced out of her home from domestic abuse. When she turned to the only family member she could, she was turned away. Suddenly, she and her son were all alone and stuck living in a van.
Julie remembers it was cold, dangerous, and they had little to eat, "Sometimes I would eat once a day, or not at all, just to try and make things work. When we did have food, I wouldn't eat as much, that way my son could eat."
Then tragedy struck again as her van was totaled. Injured, she was unable to work. Penniless, homeless, and suffering from depression and PTSD. .. Julie lost all hope.
"It was a very gloomy and overwhelming feeling, thinking 'Where am I going to go and be safe?'"
In her desperation, Julie came off the streets and into the Rescue Mission, where we met her with love and compassion.
"What was really special was one gal in there had gotten some food before I came in and offered me her last plate. There was kindness and the caseworkers were encouraging, and they just brought me in! Once I got in here, I had a sense of peace."
It was that first meal and act of compassion that convinced Julie to stay and get the long-term help she needed.
And that's what Light Our Valley is all about! It's turning the darkness into the light that Jesus offers.
There are hundreds more like Julie all throughout the Treasure Valley that need our help. But we can't do it alone. . . we need your help!
