From Homelessness to Hope: Larry’s Answer to Prayer

Elderly men and women are among the most vulnerable populations in the Treasure Valley today. Due to rising costs for food and basic services, housing shortages, and the closure of several assisted living facilities, there has been an influx of fragile and elderly people experiencing homelessness and in need of more extensive intervention and care.

Larry is seventy-two years old, disabled, retired, and one of many individuals amongst this vulnerable population. For years, he had struggled in a cycle of addiction and was also living on a limited income from Social Security. “I was living in a couple different sober living facilities but started drinking again. As I started getting down on my money, that’s when I became homeless.”

Without a home and without hope, Larry wasn’t sure where to turn. “Someone had told me about the Boise Rescue Mission, so that’s when I came here.”

Homelessness can happen at any time and have a tremendous impact on a person’s life, especially for older adults. Your generosity allows Larry and other elderly individuals experiencing homelessness to know there is a safe place to find shelter when they don’t know where to go. By donating today, you can provide hope and security to elderly men and women during these uncertain times.

For Larry, coming to the Mission was the lifeline he needed. “This has truly been an answer to a prayer. I’ve been praying for several years to get sober and clean off drugs and alcohol. It made me realize that God answers our prayers, but not in the way we think he’s going to.”

Now, Larry attends the Mission’s chapel service daily and is working with Charitable Assistance to the Community’s Homeless (CATCH) to move into a place of his own.

Many like Larry are entering into the Mission’s shelters and programs every day. Your support is a reminder that with the right help, there is hope! Will you support the Mission and join us in providing hope to elderly men and women experiencing homelessness in our community?
